Never use the word, ‘very.’ It is the weakest word in the English language; doesn’t mean anything. If you feel the urge of ‘very’ coming on, just write the word, ‘damn,’ in the place of ‘very.’ The editor will strike out the word, ‘damn,’ and you will have a good sentence. ~William Allen White
Some of the most useful guidelines for writing come from quirky snippets like this. I took this one to heart when I read it – I hardly ever use ‘very’, choosing to use ‘damn’ instead. Unfortunately, I haven’t an editor yet to strike them out. On the bright side, I have many damn fine sentences in the making, and fewer very good ones.
